Since the original Mass Effect 2 at lot of time has passed and this modding guide will show, that the Legendary Edition ME 2 is much easier to modify than its predecessor.
Modding Guides
- Mass Effect 1 Original Trilogy
- Mass Effect 2 Original Trilogy
- Mass Effect 3 Original Trilogy
- Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition
- Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition <– You Are Here
- Mass Effect 3 Legendary Edition
Before You Start
It is very important that your Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition installation is clean before you continue. This means that nothing must be modded into your installation, and all files have to be in vanilla state.
If you have never edited and/or modded your Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition installation, then you can try the “Repair” functionality of your Origin client.
But this does only check files belonging to the official install, and does not remove added files.
Therefore it is safest to start your modding journey by doing a clean install.
Creating Your Master Backup
Modding Mass Effect 2 has basically two parts: DLC Mods and Texture Mods.
While DLC Mods are just folders added to your installation, which you can rename, move and delete as you wish, Texture Mods have to actively change your installation to work.
It is also important to know, that no new DLC Mods can be added after you have applied your first Texture Mods, because such additions would break your installation.
So what do you do if you want to add or upgrade DLC Mods after you have applied some Texture Mods?
You could delete your Installation and start with a fresh one, of course. But the much faster option is to revert to a backup of a clean install.
The creation of such a backup is very simple:
You need some space where to put it, and only have to fire up the Mod Manager. The program will greet you with a list of installed Mass Effect titles for which you do not have a backup.
Open the Backup Manager, select your Mass Effect 2 installation, and click “back up”. If you do not have the international version, but a localized one installed, you must add the correct language to back up. Finally choose a backup destination and let it roll.
Once you have reached this stage, only the rest of the Legendary Edition 2 Modding Guide will matter to you. If no bad things happen, you will not have to repeat any of the steps above.
Restore From Your Master Backup
Once you have installed Texture Mods, you have to revert to your Master Backup if you wish to add or upgrade DLC mods.
To restore your backup open ModManager and select Backup and restore in the top menu, then select “Restore”.
Select your Mass Effect 2 installation folder and click on “Restore this Target.”
Once the restoration of your master backup is finished, you can move on with re-modding your installation.
DLC Modding
The full process of
Restore → DLC Modding → Texture Modding
is shown in the video to the right.
There aren’t many rules, so this might be all you need.
The Very First Mod
Always install the Unofficial LE2 Patch first, as many mods rely on it being installed.
Sometimes the Order Matters
Some mods install compatibility patches whenever certain other mods are installed.
But while some mods let you choose which compatibility patches to install, other mods do not let you unless the other mod is present.
You have to take care of the installation order in this case, for which I use a Modding Checklist, so I do not have to remember which mods need which other mods..
All mods I install and/or recommend that are listed below are in alphabetical order. In my Modding Checklist for LE2 the order is changed to honor prerequisites. You can use it as a starting point for your own modding journey.
List Of DLC Mods Used
The following is my personal list of DLC Mods. Please read the description of each Mod before downloading and installing it. You can use my Modding Checklist for the list of links and the order of installation if you like.
Unofficial LE2 Patch
The Unofficial LE2 Patch is a comprehensive bugfix mod, currently in stable public beta.

Conrad Verner Remembers (ME2LE)
Conrad Verner Remembers solves the Conrad Verner bug in which the incorrect stage is set, and he always believes you pointed a gun at him on Mass Effect 1. Since a fix on Mass Effect 1 is not implemented yet, a special, in-universe mechanic has been introduced to fix the import before meeting Conrad.
DLC Timings Mod (ME2LE)
DLC Timings Mod delays most of the former DLC content of Mass Effect 2 through different methods.
Early Recruitment (LE2)
Early recruitment of Thane, Samara and Tali. Early access to Illium. Early access to Tuchanka if Wrex is the clan leader.

Extended Romance Scenes expands on the LE2 romance scenes by adding the romantic cinematics from LE3 to all 7 LE2 romance scenes.

Miranda Romance Mini Dress (LE2)

Missing Codex Restored (ME2LE)

The Legendary Edition finally restored the entry for the M-920 Cain, but still did not fix Thermal Clips, Grenade Launcher, Drell or Oculi. This mod restores them at their appropriate place. They are fully voiced.

The Nos Astra Mineral Exchange offers the opportunity to trade commodities such as palladium, iridium, platinum, element zero and galactic standard currency on competitive terms.

Overlord Morality Fix
Overlord DLC in vanilla does not grant a single morality point through its entirety. With this mod, choosing the fate of David Archer on Overlord now grants 30 morality points. Paragon or Renegade depends on the appropriate option chosen.
Quiet Interrupts
Removes the sounds (entirely or just the trigger noise) from Paragon and Renegade interrupts for a more immersive cutscene experience
This mod might be just a small change, but it is one of my personal highlights!
Reformatted Emails
This mod edits the in-game messages to read more like an actual email inbox and less like a collection of sticky notes on a fridge. Email titles now follow the format “Name – Title”, and messages show the sender’s full name and rank/academic title (where applicable) at the top.
Ronald Taylor’s Fate Fix
Ronald Taylor’s Fate Fix properly records the choice done with Jacob’s father on his loyalty mission. Although the bug is noticeable if you pay close attention to one specific line in Mass Effect 2; it is especially a noticeable BUG in Mass Effect 3. Fixing it in 2 will ensure both Shepard and Jacob remember what they chose.
Samara Camera Restoration
This mod restores the unusual camera angles in Samara’s first conversation with Shepard aboard the Normandy. These shots were present in the 2010 release of Mass Effect 2.
Same-Gender Romances for LE2
This mod allows Tali and Thane to be romanced by both male and female Shepard, utilizing unused dialogue in the game files and repurposed dialogue from other parts of the trilogy. It also fixes issues with imported FemShep/Ashley and MaleShep/Kaidan romances, and allows and restores other same-gender content when possible.
Shepard Movement Animation Replacer
Replaces Shepard’s idle, walking, running, and sprinting animations, either by porting their LE1 animations or by swapping their gender-specific animations.
Sheploo Appearance Consistency
Makes Sheploo consistent with Mass Effect 1 and 3 on 2. For some reason in 2 he has a painted ORANGE diffuse texture that does not properly tint with any outfit. This mod restores the tintable, unpainted textures from Mass Effect 1, which will make his skintone match with any outfit as well as restores the correct opacity of his eyelashes.
Shorter Notifications (LE2)
Reduces the duration of popup notifications and hints. Includes options to selectively remove certain types of notifications.
Skip Mass Effect 2 Prologue
This mod lets you skip right to the character creator when starting a new game.
This means skipping the Miranda-Illusive Man conversation, Normandy SR-1 attack, the Genesis comic and Lazarus intro.
Note: I only use this mod when either testing new mods that need new characters, or when generating dummy characters for face alterations.
Smaller Notifications (LE2)
Reduces the size of ME2 and ME3’s notifications and moves them closer to the bottom right corner.
(NEW) Squad Outfits For Jane
This mod makes it possible to wear the outfits and masks of the following squad members: Miranda, Jack, Samara, Morinth, Tali, Kasumi, Liara.
(Important: This mod requires you to edit your Coalesced_INT.bin. Only download this mod if you know hot to do that.)
(NEW) Stop Auto-Equipping Weapons
Provides new Options when acquiring a weapon in Mass Effect 2, ‘Choose Loadout’ or ‘Equip Weapon’, while ‘Continue’ only closes the prompt.
About the next three Mods: Only install one of the three!
“Subtle Face for Tali” is very compatible with other mods, Talis Visor is semi-transparent and her facial animations are really good.
“Tali Remastered” has a very beautiful and well animated face, her Visor is not fully transparent, but the mod has some compatibility issues.
“Tali Zorah Overhaul” is very compatible with other mods, Talis Visor is always fully transparent but her facial animations are a bit weak.
Please read the mod descriptions on the mod pages carefully and have a good look at their image galleries.
Subtle Face for Tali – LE2
More visible and detailed face for Tali’Zorah.
New textures and fully animated face mesh.
*** OR ***
Tali Remastered LE2
This DLC add Creative Machinima’s 3D model of Tali Zorah to LE2
*** OR ***
Tali Zorah Overhaul (LE2)
Overhaul of Tali’s LE2 appearance with a completely new, fully animated face.
Again, do *NOT* install more than one of the Tali mods, it would break your game!

Adds new tank top outfits to casual appearance for both Female & Male Shepard. Includes optional additional casual outfits for FemShep.
Thematic Squad Guns (LE2)
Changes weapons for certain Squad members to be more Gameplay and Lore accurate and fun.
Trigger Buttons (LE2)
Trigger “ambush” events with a button press. Allows players to delay Horizon, the Collector Ship, Arrival message and the Crew Abduction until a time of their choosing.
Vignette Remover
Removes the ugly vignette effect in the corners of the screen, producing the same image as photo mode with vignette off!
Wrex Armour Consistency (LE2)
Replaces Wrex’s ME2 Warlord armour with his iconic red look from ME1 and ME3.
(NEW) Zaeeds Wholesome Revenge
Revenge is a dish best served at relativistic speeds. You can save the workers and catch Vido…if you are fast enough.
Texture Modding
If you really want to lift up your Mass Effect 1 experience, you will have to install texture mods.
Luckily it is very simple to install these mods, you do not even have to quit ModManager. Instead, open the Tools menu and select:
“Mass Effect Modder (for Legendary Edition)”.
Each of the three Mass Effect titles has its own section.
Click on “Mods Manager” under “Mass Effect” and select the “Mods Installer”
Here you click on “Add to list” and select all MEM files you wish to install.
I prefix my files with LE1, LE2 and LE3, so mods are grouped by game title and therefore easier to select.
Once you have selected all texture mods you want to install, click on “Install all mods” .
Now do something completely different, because this takes a long time, almost 30 minutes on my laptop.
List Of Texture Mods Used
The following is my personal list of Texture Mods. Please read the description of each Mod before downloading and installing it.
A Lot Of Textures (ALOT)
Vanilla-friendly, exhaustive and easy to install graphical overhaul mod for the Mass Effect Trilogy.
Eyebrows and facial hair restoration
This mod restores a missing texture that was causing sparse eyebrows and facial hair, making them more in-line with how LE1 and LE3 eyebrows look. This will affect ALL custom Shepard eyebrows and facial hair options, but not NPCs.
Fix Middle Part Lipsticks LE1/2/3
Fixes the lighter color issue on lips which is especially visible on darker lipstick colors.
FemSheppings MELE Eyes
Eye textures. Replaces textures for male and female humans. I think it replaces asari eyes too. Check image section for the comparison. It makes the iris more detailed and the pupil smaller.
Improved Normandy Crash Site Flashback Textures
New 4K versions of the flashback images shown during Normandy Crash Site in LE2, which were not updated in Legendary Edition.
Jack complexion (LE2 and LE3)
This look softens her make up quite a bit and also adds a couple of scars to further emphasize the abuse she suffered.
Jack Alternate Loyalty Outfit
A revamp of Jack’s loyalty outfit with hi-res tattoos for Mass Effect 2 LE.
New Lashes for FemShep
New Lashes for FemShep.
No Headgear for Squadmates (Squad Select Textures)
This mod removes (or alters) the headgear on squadmates’ Alternate Appearance Pack armors.
(NSFW) Paramours
Fully nude textures for in-game female body meshes.
Important: This mod and it’s files are merely texture edits and can NOT make characters nude. Specifically, these only affect the vanilla nude mesh, NOT the underwear.
